Council Rare Drug Shipments Save Life of William Ellis '44 in Prague

Twenty-five grams of vital streptomycin rushed to a Prague hospital by the Student Council meant the difference between life and death to William S. Ellis '44 as he lay critically ill in the midst of a medicine shortage.

Stricken by a malignant form of tuberculosis, the vice president of the International Union of Student was reported yesterday as slowly regaining his health through the prompt action of the Council and Dr. Arlie V. Bock '15 of the Hygiene Department. Dr. Bock, in cooperation with the National Intercollegiate Christian Council and the Boston Red Cross arranged for a second shipment of 62 grams of the rare drug to Ellis.

Winter in Switzerland

While Prague doctors feel that Ellis condition precludes any return to the United States for at least six months, they plan to speed his recovery by placing him in a Swiss sanatorium for the winter.

Ernest M. Howell '47, president of N.I.C.C. recently announced plans for a "Bill Ellis Fund" to supply the $1000 necessary to insure complete recovery of the former Student Council treasurer.
