Andrew E. Rice '43 2G yesterday won the Massachusetts chairmanship of the American Veterans Committee in the closing sessions of the AVC's weekend state convention in Springfield.

Great-grandson of former University President Charles W. Eliot and a native of Boston, 25-year-old Rice resides in Madison, Wisconsin. He edged out a 1029-989 victory over Alex Karetsky of Boston for the top job in the 43-chapter Bay State organization after last-minute nomination by Lawrence Jarfa 2D.

Previously, outgoing chairman Edwin H. B. Pratt '36 had refused renomination and a movement to "draft" Endicott "Chub" Peabody 2L had subsided.

Getting a "climate of opinion favorable to progressive candidates in the coming crucial elections" will rank a chief emphasis during his tenure according to a statement from Rice last night. In order to devote full time to his duties Rice said he would resign a post he now holds on the Graduate Advisory Council as well as the executive secretaryship of the University AVC chapter.

A veteran of three-year Army service, Rice held the vice-presidency of American Unitarian Youth in 1942-43.

George Dysart 2L gained a seat on the state AVC council while Stanley G. Karson '48 failed in his bid.
