It wasn't the Stadium. It wasn't even Saturday. As a matter of fact, it was Monday, but to more than 400 screaming fans and 40-odd Eliot and Kirkland footballers who fought out the House title for 1947, it was the big game.
After four periods of the hardest football seen on Soldiers Field all year, the Mastodons had firmly convinced all observers of their superiority, as they scored a bloody 8 to 2 win over a rough and tough Deacon squad. Hard-running Austie Lyne, Jumbo right-half, climaxed a 58-yard march with the game-winning off-tackle plunge from the one-yard stripe into the second period.
Two other plays had brought cheers from Mastodon ranks as they clicked for touchdowns, only to have officials turn one into a safety and disallow the other on a technicality. Penalties also quenched Kirkland hopes, as no less than seven 15-yard fines were slapped on over-eager Deacons.
Bingham Steals March
Between-halves festivities found bands from both organizations parading, as "Big E" and "Big K" formation sped up, down, and off the field. Eliot's spirited cheerleaders, headed by "Fob" Cobb, ripped off sizable gains through ill-organized Deacon defenses, but the big surprise of the day was attributed to William J. Bingham '16, who craftily provided collapsible goalposts to foil the jubilant throng of rooters which stormed out of the north stands after the contest.
The only gleam of hope for Kirkland rooters came early in the opening stanza, when a Deacon quick-kick bounced off Dick Muessel's hand and into the end zone, where it was covered for two quick points. The final scoring came similarly in the last quarter when Bob Adams broke through to block a Deacon kick. In the end-zone scramble, he fell over the back line for two more points. Four more house games remain on schedule-to be played tomorrow and Friday.
