Monitors Ordered to 'Spread Girls Around' in Classrooms

Radcliffe girls will get an even break in Harvard classrooms according to a statement made yesterday by John G. Ducey '44, assistant registrar of the University.

Responding to 'Cliffedwellers' protests that monitors made them sit either in the back of crowded classrooms or in drafty corners, Ducey called a meeting of all head monitors yesterday and instructed them "to spread the women around the room."

Seating plans will be revised to give Radcliffe special rows distributed evenly throughout the lecture halls. It is difficult to insert the girls in the alphabetical seating plan, as the monitors receive only a list of Harvard students, Ducey pointed out.

Girls Have Movable Seats

The real problem is classrooms that just don't have enough seats, says the assistant registrar. Harvard men cannot be assigned the movable chairs, as these have no numbers. The girls may think it makes them displaced persons, but if they want to sit down, they will have to use the chairs.

Ducey commented that in spite of the heavy Radcliffe protest over seating arrangements, it was only in a few overcrowded classes that the situation was really acute. "Some monitors had already met the problem themselves," he said, adding that the others "were pretty able fellows" and would doubtless find the ladies suitable seats.
