Fast Rutgers Eleven Makes Second Stadium Run Today

By Robert W. Morgan jr.

Scarlet uniforms, bullet passes, and double flanker formations New Jersey style will be seen once again in the Stadium this afternoon. Rutgers' wing-footed athletes are making their second appearance in Cambridge, starting at two o'clock.

Also visible will be essentially the same group of football players who wreaked Crimson hopes for an undefeated season right around Hallowe'en time last year. This fall, however, most of them are playing second string and Harlow's eleven has been beaten twice to date. The local bookies quote Rutgers a one point favorite, but the Crimson will have to stage a brilliant upset to equal or better this mark.

Won Four Straight

The team from New Brunswick has won four straight--three walkaways from Fordham, Lehigh, and Western Reserve, and a close 14 to 7 decision over Princeton three weeks ago. The Scarlet dropped its opener to Columbia 40 to 28. In this game, they led 28 to 27 at the three-quarter mark, after erasing a four-touchdown deficit, and felt certain of winning before Columbia rallied again.

Big man on the team is passer, runner, and T-formation quarterback Frank Burns, who directed the squad's 13 to 0 upset here last year. Besides his clever ball-handling, Burns backs up the line on defense.

Scouts Chief Boston and Harry Jacunski, who saw Rutgers swamp Lehigh a week ago, spoke respectfully of the Scarlet line and of backs John Sabo and Irwin Winkelreid. Crimson eyes should also focus on two second stringers who broke up last year's game in the fourth quarter--quarterback Al Malekoff and halfback Harvey Grimsley.

Sabo Leading Galner

Although the visiting team as a whole will outweight the opposition by about 15 pounds to the man, its backfield is relatively light. Fullback Sabo, for example, tips the scales at 175. Sabo, however, is the team's leading ground gainer. He is the only newcomer to last year's starting backfield.

On the home front, Dick Harlow is sticking with the lineup he has used all week. John Fiorentino will start at center after his seven-day conversion from end, and acting captain Nick Rodis will make his first public appearance at left tackle.

Wounds Healing

The tide of injuries seems to be turning at last, with all but four men ready to play today. Jim Kenary, Don Stone, John Gorczynski, and Howie Houston will sit this one out. The loss of this quartet, plus Vince Moravec, however, weakens the Crimson severely at center, both tackles, fullback, and in forward passing.

The team has shown inspired work all week following a scrimmage Tuesday. Because of the injuries, the A team had been withheld from contact work in practice since the season opened.
