Europe Focus of World Recovery, Spender Declares

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"Europe is the most important part of the world," stated Stephen Spender, one of Britain's leading poets, last night in a discussion of "The Intellectual Future of Europe."

An overflow crowd in the Dunster House dining hall heard Spender declare that the Europeans are "passionately concerned with a reconciliation of freedom of the individual with economic justice, which usually depends on socialization."

The British poet stressed that Europeans are not divided rigidly into pro-Stalinists and pro-capitalists. "The conflict exists most keenly in Europe," he said, adding that if a man does choose one extreme, "he is only choosing an environment in which he can continue his struggle for individual liberty."

Spender admitted that Europe is politically powerless, but asked his audience to think in terms of peace, for 'war would lead to the destruction of Europe as well as of all modern civilization."
