Soccer Team Shuts Out Jumbos, 7-0

Unlike the affair at the Stadium, the issue was never in doubt in Medford Saturday when the Varsity soccer team steamrollered to its first victory of the season by the score of 7 to 0 against a hapless squad from Tufts. Counting goals in every period, the Crimson kept almost continuous control of the ball in successfully opening its 1947 season.

From the opening whistle, the Crimson pressed all the way and consistently outran the Jumbos, who showed a lack of condition caused by only one week of practice. That the score was not considerably higher was a tribute to the skill of the Tufts goalie, Bernard Goldman, who handled over 40 chances.

After missing at least ten shots in the first few minutes of play, the Varsity got its first score when Roy Heisler, Crimson center forward, sank one from the left side of the goal. Gaston Ascarraga booted in the second goal just after the second period opened and five minutes later Heisler scored again on a pass from the wing.

Tally in All Periods

Hans Estin, in at center forward, got the fourth Crimson score and the last of the first half, but the parade moved swiftly on when Manny Aguirre scored on a dash in from his left wing position halfway through the third period. Carlos Blanco booted in the sixth as the fourth period opened, and Bill Dawson counted the final one fifteen seconds before the game ended, tapping the ball in from a skirmish in front of the goal.

The opening lineup for the Crimson was: Batchelder, g.; Scuily, r.f.; Burrowes, l.f.; Louria, r.h.; Ogden, c.h.; Mavor (capt.), l.h.; Spivak, r.o.; Blanco, r.i.; Heisler, c.f.; Chun, l.f.; Dawson, l.o. Substitutes were: Aguirre, Ascarraga, Carswell, Estin, Jessner, Wallace, Seamans, Ragle, Gilbert, Mudd, and Bell.

Freshmen Win

Tallying once in the first period and once in the last period, the Freshman soccer team opened its season last Saturday with a 2 to 0 shutout over Tabor Academy on the Business School field. Although the play transpired mostly in Tabor territory, the inexperience of both teams caused many dashes down the field which might easily have changed the course of the game. Last year the Tabor team tied the Freshmen 1 to 1 in one of the three games which the 1946 Yardlings failed to win.
