Freshman Running Attack Swamps Exeter 28-6 as Quartet of Backs Score

Two Crimson Johnnies proved too much for an outweighed and never threatening Exeter Academy eleven Saturday afternoon, as the Freshman grid team racked up its second win of the season, 28 to 6.

The prep schoolers just couldn't stop fullback Johnny White or halfback Johnny West whenever they chose to pick up some yardage. West smashed through the line for a five or six yard gain almost every time he carried the ball, while White, light and fast, swept around either end regularly for long advances.

An off tackle slant by West in the first period opened the scoring, and Jim Lowell, playing his first game as quarterback, traveled eight yards on a quarterback sneak for the second Crimson tally before the half ended. A 40 yard run by White had set up the play for Lowell.

Exeter Tallies Late

Exeter's Art Mellon charged off tackle in the third period for the loser's lone score. In the fourth frame a White end run of 22 yards chalked up the third Freshman touchdown, and Ed Stearns heaved a pass good for 45 yards to back Dave Warden, for the final six-pointer of the afternoon.

The Yardling line, 84 pounds heavier and ages wiser than the schoolboy forward wall, had no trouble clearing paths for their backs or in stopping the Exeter runners. Bill Rosenau and Pete Coyne, first string guards, were both injured in the hard line play. Coyne, however, was able to return to the game.

While their Varsity big brothers were losing their contest by one conversion, the Freshman place-kicking department functioned perfectly, Jim Lowell booting three and Bill Rosenan splitting the uprights once.
