Australian Foreign Minister Herbert V. Evatt, who is also his country's prime representative to the United Nations, will give the annual Oliver Wendell Holmes Lectures at the Law School this year.
The subject of his three lectures, which are free and open to the public, will be "The United Nations." The opening address, scheduled for Friday evening, October 17 at Sanders Theatre will be "The United Nations: Its Formation at San Francisco."
Evatt's second topic, "The Working of the United Nations" will be presented the next Thursday, followed by "The Future of the United Nations" the next evening at New Lecture Hall.
Distinguished Diplomat
Evatt has had a long career in Australian public life. Before representing his government as Foreign Minister at the San Francisco conference, he was Attorney General in the War Cabinet of the Commonwealth. From 1930 to 1940 he was Justice of the Federal High Court of Australia. He served in the legislative assembly of New South Wales from 1925 to 1929, and is at present a member of the Australian House of Representatives.
While a member of the United Nations General Assembly he has been a prominent spokesman for the smaller nations, as well as receiving the second largest number of votes for the position of President of the United Nations General Assembly in the recent election.
