Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Two falls and four decisions by Crimson matmen added up to a 22 to 6 victory for the Varsity wrestling team over the Engineers from M.I.T. yesterday afternoon at the Boylston Street Y.M.C.A. In taking their first meet of the season, the Crimson grapplers showed considerable improvement over their performances in the practice pre-vacation match against the Freshmen.
Pins by captain Don Louria in the 175-pound class and Pete Fuller in the unlimited bout clinched the meet for Harvard, but lopsided decisions in three of the lighter weights had already fore-shadowed the ending. In the 128-pound class Phil Busby edged Dave Knodel of the sliderulers 7 to 6 while Walt Perry scored two near-falls in winning a 10-0 decision over Eugene Deval of M.I.T.
Frank Tyng won a stormy 12 to 8 match over Tech-man Earnest Miklau, and Dan Ray took the fourth straight bout for the Crimson when he defeated Wilbur Haggerty 6 to 2. The grapplers lost decisions in the 121-pound class where Harry Schless was edged by one point and in the 165-pound division where Tech ace Whit Mauzy won by a 9 to 2 margin.
Louria came through with the first pin of the meet when he scored over the Tech captain Less Ackerman in 1:40 of the second period with a head chancery. Fuller got a fall over the Engineer's heavyweight with a reverse nelson and a crotch hold in 7:45 of the last period.
