How Cambridge’s Political Power Brokers Shape the 2025 Election
Two undergraduate members of the Mountaineering Club have decided to drop their books for a while and accept the invitation of the Ronne Expedition to spend 14 months in the frozen wastes of Antarctic.
William Latady, special student and president of the Club, has already left Cambridge and is heading for Beaumont, Texas, where the expedition will set sail on January 15. Latady is taking the frigid trip in the capacity of aerial photographer, while his colleague, Robert H. T. Dodson '47, a former vice-president of the mountaineers, will be the trip's geologist.
Sponsored by four private scientific societies, with some backing from the Navy, the expedition has no relation to the Byrd outfit which is already digging in the snowfields. Commander Finn Ronne, for whom the trip is named, will lead his group on their various scientific quests to Palmerland, an area of the Antarctic lying directly south of Cape Horn.
Geological, geographical, and astronomical research are the principal purposes of the trip. The expedition will live in tents and igloos in their base camp and will make a trip to the pole itself during their stay.
