Estimated 470 Will Register On Thursday

Almost All Entrants Are Vets; Half Have Attended Before; Student Body Stays at 5500

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Upwards of 470 men will start grinding through the registration mill in Memorial Hall on Thursday, according to figures released over the weekend by the Registrar's Office which indicated that the present size of the student body will remain approximately the same--about 5500--during the spring term.

About half of the men scheduled to register will be returning Harvard men, 30 percent will be newly admitted veterans, while the remaining 20 percent will be men holding "tickets of admission," but who entered the service before ever reaching Cambridge.

Class Assignments Undetermined

Because of the complications of war credits, no definite compilation has yet been made as to what academic class these men will be assigned. Delmar Leighton '19, Dean of Freshmen, has stated that those classified as Freshmen will get the same sort of reception as any normal entering class.

Meanwhile, both the Veterans Office and the Undergraduate Housing Office were completing preparations to handle the new influx of students. The Straus Hall Housing Office, for married veterans, has announced that its peak demand for housing has been passed and that no difficulties are expected in the near future. Although the Hotel Brunswick has now been filled, there are vacancies left at the Harvardevens Village project.

Gym Turns Dorm Again

In undergraduate housing, however, a short term crisis is foreseen by Robert B. Watson '37, associate dean of the College, but with the top floor of the Indoor Athletic Building being readied to receive any possible overflow, all new registrants will be housed, he said. A break in the number of applications rolling into the Office has made the College housing picture considerably brighter.

Watson issued an appeal last week to men leaving College, asking them to vacate their rooms quickly, so that reassignments could be made with a minimum of dislocation.
