In a final spurt that just missed being a finish in the real Frank Merriwell tradition, the Varsity soccer team scored two goals in the last five minutes of play, almost got two others, and finally had to be content with a 5 to 5 tie contest with a well-coordinated Worcester Polytechnic Institute eleven yesterday afternoon on the Business School Field.
The early stages of the game looked as though the contest would end in a rout for the Crimson. Before ten minutes elapsed Phil Potter, Varsity center forward, slammed in two quick scores. But the red-shirted team from Worcester bounced right back, and before the half ended Joe Hearn, their center forward, kicked in four angle shots, all on quick breaks, and the score stood 4-2.
Gaston Azcarrage got the Crimson's third goal late in the third quarter, but Hearn quickly countered with WPI's fifth tally. Then in the last ten minutes the Varsity eleven caught fire and kept the play almost continuously in WPI territory.
The Crimson's fourth score came on a penalty kick by captain Carlos Blanco. The kick hit the crossbar of the goal, but Potter booted the rebound into the nets. With less than four minutes to go, Jose del Rio slammed in a long angle shot from the left of the goal to tie things up.
Two five minute overtime periods followed but although most of the play was in WPI territory, the Crimson team, by this time thoroughly worn out, could not chalk up the winning goal.
