Four College Vets Get National Scholarships

Four University veterans, with service records ranging from 34 to 54 months, have been awarded Veterans' National Scholarships, Francis S. Von Stade, Jr. '38, Director of Scholarships in the College, announced today.

Oldest member of the group is Ronald M. Beveridge, now a resident of Cambridge. Others include Arthur B. Boucot of Philadelphia, with 46 missions over Europe, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters to his credit; Lehon I. Twarog of New Bedford, Mass, with greatest time in service of the group, including two and a half years in the South Pacific; and Arleigh A. Tison '49 of Shreveport, La., recipient of a Purple Heart for wounds in action.

Stipends Vary

The scholarships were established during the past year in recognition of outstanding ability and promise among students whose education was interrupted by the war, and are open to veterans of the armed forces of the United Nations, to former members of the American Field Service, and to veterans of the United States Merchant Marine.

Awards were made on a purely competitive basis, dependant on grades, character, extra curricular activities, and intellectual promise.

Stipends vary according to individual needs, and are adjusted in cases where the veteran is receiving aid from the government.
