Crimson Crew Rated as Underdog At Washington Invitation Regatta

Clearly the underdog, Tom Bolles' varsity crew will take to the water tomorrow in an attempt to salvage something from a spotty season by turning in a good showing at the University of Washington's invitation regatta on Lake Washington.

With the Poughkeepsie contest still unreconstructed, the nation-wide struggle out west is the outstanding rowing event of the inter-collegiate season. Hence a victory, unlooked for by even the most rabid of Crimson rooters, or a finish among the top three eights, would mean that the current Bolles aggregation would return the sweep swingers to a position somewhere near the top of the heap spot that Nowell operatives have traditionally held.

Departed Saturday

The oarsmen left last Saturday by plane for the 2,000 meter event which will see Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Navy, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, University of California, University of British Columbia, and, of course, the University of Washington Participating. Of this listing the first seven all defeated the crimson shell at Annapolis last month, though previously the local boatmen out stroked Princeton and MIT on the Charles.

Though seriously limited by lack of experience and illness, the crew did trounce the Elis on June 1 by three boat-lengths, thus making the season a technical success regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's affair.

Making the trip were Sylvester Gardiner, Bib Chauler, Lane Barton, Paul Knaplund, Mike Scully, Tom Perry, Lew Bohn, John Germley, Lou Cox, Barrie White and Sam King.
