Griswold Will Succeed Landis at Law School

Erwin Nathaniel Griswold, formerly professor of Law, has been named Dean of the Law School by the Board of Overseers, President Conant announced last last week. The appointment becomes effective July 1.

Griswold succeeds James M. Landis, who resigned to become chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board. Landis had just returned a little more than a year ago to resume his duties at the Law School after serving as American director of economic operations in the Middle East during the war. During that time Edmund M. Morgan '02, Royall Professor of Law, was acting dean.

Forty-five-year-old Erwin Griswold is a graduate of Oberlin College. After five years as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General, he joined the University faculty in 1934, becoming a full professor the following year. A trustee of Oberlin and a member of the American Bar Association, American Law Institute, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dean-elect Griswold has also written several books on law.
