Deerfield Squad Buries Lacrosse Team's Defenses

Completely stalled for three-quarters of the game by the tactics of an aggressive Deerfield squad, the lacrosse team finally got going in the last quarter but could not overcome the overwhelming Deerfield lead and lost 17-5 last Saturday at Deerfield.

Deerfield attackmen scored repeatedly on screen shots and cut plays with Phil Cranshaw and Ham Gates doing most of the stick work. Pete Peters scored five times for Deerfield while Cranshaw netted three. Curtis Cushman playing point for the Crimson defense held Gates, the Deerfield captain and an All-New England prep school star, to three goals.

Tight guarding by the Deerfield attackmen and midfield made it difficult for the Crimson defensemen to clear the ball. Countless long downfield passes were intercepted by the alert Deerfield players.

For the first three quarters the Crimson attack showed a strange inability to set up any scoring plays. They ran aimlessly around the Deerfield cage seldom taking a shot. In the last twenty minutes they solved the Deerfield defense and scored five time in quick succession. Bob Richards scored three times from the first attack position while Pete Grady and George Wood caged one each.

Next Wednesday afternoon at Soldiers Field the team will face the Boston Lacrosse Club which recently acquired three former All-Americans.
