Sixteen students, half of them graduates have been elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Saul Sherman '47, secretary of the organization announced yesterday. Three of the new men are members of the class of '44, two are from '45' eight from '47, and three from '48.

Graduates elected are: Donald J. Berets '47 of New York City and Lowell House; Mitchell I. Goodman '45 of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Lowell House; Reuben P. Hersh '47, of Mt Vernon, N.Y. and Adams House; Harold C. Hinton '45; Hugh M. Hyde '44 of Far Hills, N. J.; Richard P. Kleeman '44; Albert J. Marks, Jr. '47 of West Hartford, Conn. and Lowell House; and Peter D. Wyman '44.

The five new members in Senior standing are: Albert S. Cook, Jr. '47 of New York City and Lowell House; Edward C. Franklin '47, of Forest Hills, N.Y. and Lowell House; John T. Noonan, Jr., of Brookline and Lowell House; James N. Snyder '47 of Akron, Ohio and 19A Forest Street; and Alfred F. Traverse, Jr. '47 of St. Joseph, Michigan and Lowell House.

Juniors elected include: Richard T. Gill '48, of Long Branch, N.J. and Adams House; Kurt J. Isselbacher '48 of Portsmouth, N.H. and Lowell House; and Leonard Laster '48, of New York City and Lowell House.

Sherman revealed last night that there are only four PBK members, in addition to those named yesterday, presently in College. He also said that the decision as to whether marshals would be elected is to be taken up at the next meeting, when the new members are to be initiated.

The current group of three Junior PBK electees are the first to be chosen since April of last year, which accounts in part, Sherman said, for the small PBK membership.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society normally holds two elections, each year, selecting men in the spring and at commencement. For the eight men of Junior rank chosen each year the requirements are nine A's out of 12 courses, while Seniors must make 11 A's out of their total of 16 courses.
