University laboratories will play host to eight or ten Russian scientists this summer, Harlow Shapley, director of the College Observatory, noted yesterday. Just returned from an international scientific conference in Copenhagen, Professor Shapley declared that Soviet astronomers would be trained here in the use of some of the observatory's most advanced equipment.
Professor Shapley pointed to a growing Russian interest and gratitude fro the Hugh Cabot Memorial Fund, raised in this country to build a penicillin laboratory inn the Soviet Union. As an astronomer, he praised the offer of the Russian delegation at the conference
The prodigious USSR state support for scientific research, even along "pure" lines was lauded by Shapley, who expressed hopes for an American equivalent and who observed somewhat bitterly that American research must often be conducted by "tired professors in over-time hours."
