Powerful Eli Mermen Top Crimson, Losing Three Events in 48-27 Battle

Coach Hal Ulen's mermen were in top form when they met the Eli swimmers last Saturday at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven, but the vaunted Eli power crushed them into a 48 to 27 defeat. The predominantly Freshmen team, captained by Frank Krayer, fought hard gainst the veteran Yale Varsity, spurred on by the feeling which always accompanies a Crimson-Blue match.

Eli stars were Floyd Smoot, who took the 50 yard freestyle as well as the backstroke, Harry Lockery in the dive, and Howie Stallings in the 220 freestyle. Of the other events, both the 300 yard medley and the 400 yard relay went to Yale.

To no one's surprise, Chuck Holzier, who broke the Freshman breaststroke record two weeks ago in the St. George's meet, took first in that event with the time of 2:39.8. Another first was snatched by Ted Norris in the 440 yard freestyle, while Bob Snow came in third.

The only other first place taken by the Crimson was when John Watkins swam the 100 yard freestyle to 56.7 seconds. A second and a third, however, were copped by Howie Simpson and Snow respectively, in the 220, and Tom Drohan look second in the dive.

With this loss the mermen rounded out a season of eight victories in ten starts, while the Elis remain unbeaten over a two-year stretch.
