First to reply to a petition organized by Carl J. Friedrich, professor of Government, for removal of bans on correspondence between Americans and Germans in the American occupation zone, Sol Bloom, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Wednesday that he hoped for "a satisfactory solution" to the problem.
The request, signed by 99 prominent names, including members of the Faculty, has been sent to President Truman, the Secretaries of War, State, and the Treasury, and the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee as well as to Congressman Bloom.
Seeking a favorable decision from the Allied Control Commission, Friedrich feels that free mail communication, particularly between American and German scholars, will be more effective than public propaganda in helping the Germans understand democracy.
