Large Reading Class Steps Up Speed Rate, Emphasizes Curiosity

Under the supervision of William G. Perry '35, Director of the Bureau of Supervisors, two unprecedently large classes of 85 and 100 students this week completed one month courses to increase reading rate and comprehension.

Studies of the results of the class in the past have shown an average improvement in speed of 150 to 200 wents per minute, and a long term benefit to students' grades, Perry stated. Although not yet tabulated, statistics on the fall session ore expected to be comparable.

The course is not one in "remedial" reading, Perry emphasized, because there are few "visual difficulties" Involved. "The problem at college level is for the students to develop an aggressive and inquisitive attitude towant the reading matter and to develop reading as a study skill," he commented.
