Discussion Group Debates on Coal Stoppage, Unions

Only nine Freshmen showed up last night at 7:15 o'clock to participate in the Union Discussion Group's open forum on "John L. Lewis versus the United States."

Under the chairmanship of Charles J. W. Bailey '50, member of the club's steering committee, discussion at the meeting left the specific issues of the coal strike and wandered over the entire field of labor-management relations and government legislation concerning labor unions.

Opinion on these measures was varied and led to many warm exchanges during the course of the discussion. Given especial emphasis were such proposed labor regulations as the Case Bill and the Ball-Burton Bill, whose mention aroused charges of "union busting" from pro-laborites.

Also considered at the meeting was the question of future topics for discussion. The group unanimously approved the topic, "What shall our policy be towards Russia?" A meeting to debate this question will be held some time after the Christmas vacation, with the final choice of date being made by the group's officers.
