With a nearly complete Varsity squad on hand, Coach Dick Harlow began preparing in earnest yesterday for the Crimson's battle with Dartmouth on Saturday. The only two first-stringers busy with hour exams were Howie Houston and Nick Rodis, but the rest of the week will find about four "A" team members hitting the books every day.
Pass offense, a defensive scrimmage against the Freshman eleven for the "A" team and a signal drill were on the schedule in the chilliest workout this season at Soldiers Field.
Dewey Moved to Guard
Ned Dewey, as promises by Harlow on Monday, was moved to the running guard position formerly occupied by the injured Emil Drvaric, and his running mate was Bob Drennan, who may rate the nod over Rodis for starting left guard against the Indians.
The battle for Walter Coulson's left end slot is also in progress, with Len Cummings, George Hanptfuhrer and Pete Garland the principal contenders. A final decision on the assignment will probably not be made until Friday, when the Varsity squad leaves for Hanover.
Farrell with "A"
For the second successive day, Dave Farrell, captain of the Junior Varsity eleven, run signals with the "A" team, and won Harlow's praise for his running and passing. Farrell will accompany the Varsity squad to Dartmouth. Frank Miklos, who is expected to give iron-man Henry Goethals considerable relief at the quarterback post against the Green, was also with the first-string eleven.
Miklos is one Harlow's punting backs, as is Bill Jackson, and this pair, in addition to end Wally Flynn, are expected to handle the booting chores against Dartmouth in the absence of Coulson.
Leo Flynn appeared at practice yesterday, and will be available against the Indians on Saturday. Flynn was slightly injured against the Scarlet, but has recovered rapidly.
Another "T"
The Dartmouth attack which Harvard will face on Saturday emanates from the "T", and has all the trappings--flankers, men in motion and laterals--that the Rutgers eleven employed against the Varsity. Although the Green has dropped four successive contests, they are expected to be hard to beat on their home field, and possess dangerous backs in Con Pensavalle, the team's best passer, fullback Tom Douglas, the captain and Larry Bartnick who had a field day at the Stadium in 1942.
Standouts on the Indian line are "Mo" Monahan, whom scouts rate as the best left end the Crimson will see all season, and tackle Art Young, a rugged operative who also calls the Green's offensive signals.
