The Varsity grid schedule will be cut down to eight games next fall from its 1946 peak of nine, Athletic Director William J. Bingham '16, announced Saturday, with the Crimson playing only two teams in 1947 which the eleven did not face this year.
The University of Virginia and Boston University will be the newcomers on the slate. B.U., taking the place of both Connecticut and Tufts as the opener, may prove to be stiffer early competition for the Cantabs, since the Terriers defeated Tufts this year by almost as large a margin as the Harlowmen did.
Charlottesville, Virginia, will be the scene of the contest with the Cavaliers, whom the Crimson have played on eight previous occasions in the Stadium but never away. Harvard has won every one of its past encounters with Virginia, taking the last, in 1938, by 40 to 13.
The only other striking features of the 1947 card entail return of several pre-war features to pre-war form. The annual Dartmouth encounter will be back in its old Stadium spot next fall, after having been moved up to Hanover for the first time in memory in 1946, and the Princeton classic will be back in its traditional position just before the Brown and Yale games.
The schedule: October 4, Boston University; 11, Virginia at Charlottesville; 18, Holy Cross; 25, Dartmouth; November 1, Rutgers; 8, Princeton; 15, Brown; 22, Yale at New Haven.
