Three goals slammed home in quick succession in the opening eight minutes of the second half meant the first victory of the season for the Varsity soccer team as they came from behind to beat an aggressive Tufts outfit by the score of 3 to 2 on the Business School Field Saturday.
The first period saw the honors about equally divided between the two teams with each side missing several good chances to score. In the second quarter, however, the Crimson booters took command and were passing at the Blue's goal mouth continuously with shot after shot being turned aside by Bob Kline, the Jumbo goalie.
Jumbos Score on Breakaway
Just before the period ended Tufts got the ball on a breakaway toward the Crimson goal, and Andy Feeney, Tuft's center forward, got the first score of the day from a position that appeared to everyone but the referee to be about five yards offside. As soon as the second half began, the Varsity resumed the offensive, and this time the shots began to register.
Phil Potter, Gaston Azcarraga, and Bob Smith each blasted in a kick, and the Varsity led 3 to 1 with 38 minutes left to play. Tufts came fighting back, however, and Feeney got his team's second goal with two minutes left to go in the third period. The fourth period found both teams pretty well worn out from playing in the sizzling heat, and the play settled down to a ragged defensive battle with Bob Purinton and Dick Forster, the Crimson fullbacks, and Dick Harshman, the goalie, saving several potential goals.
The Harvard lineup was: Harshman, g.; Purinton, r.f.; Forster, l.f.; Mavor, r.h.; Ogden, c.h.; Carswell, Seamans, l.h.; Del Rio, Smith, r.o.; Azcarraga, r.i.; Potter, c.f.; Blanco, l.i.; Dawson, Corrigan, l.o.,
Freshman Tie Tabor
After playing the four regulation quarters and two overtime periods besides, the Freshman soccer team still had to be content with a 1 to 1 tie with Tabor Academy when they could not penetrate a tight Tabor defense last Saturday on the Business School Field. Francis Chen, playing center forward for the Yardlings, booted in the only goal for the Crimson. R.C.
