Punt Protection Emphasized In Varsity's Practice Session

"B" and "C" Teams Scrimmage Under Lights; First Squad Works on Ruigers Defenses

By Irvin M. Horowitz

Holy Cross blocked one punt on Saturday, partially blocked another, and generally gave Varsity kickers a hard time all afternoon long. That's what Coach Dick Harlow had in mind yesterday, when he devoted a large part of the Crimson's practice session to kicking under pressure.

Using his "B" and "C" elevens in the drill, the head coach stressed protection for his punters, and will probably work on the same item for the rest of the week.

With his squad at completely full strength for the first time since long before the opening game, Harlow put his second and third elevens through a tough scrimmage under Stadium lights to conclude yesterday's session. The "B" team's line drew praise for its blocking efforts, and guards Jim Feinberg and Bob Drennan were especially prominent.

"A" Team Scrimmages Today

The "A" team, which will probably scrimmage today, worked on pass defense, defenses against Rutgers plays, pass offense and a signal drill before calling it a day. In the passing work, Pete Petrillo was hitting his receivers fairly consistently.

There have been no changes in the first eleven for more than a week now, and it seems likely that the same squad which opened the Holy Cross fracas will start the Rutgers game.

George Hauptfuhrer, who was sidelined last week because of an injury, will be fit for duty on Saturday, leaving trainer Jimmy Cox temporarily without Varsity company in his daily conditioning workouts.

New Tackle Works With "B" Team

A new face in the Crimson second team is that of Freshman Ken Smith, who has apparently supplanted Chet Pierce as second string right tackle. Smith, who has been tried previously at guard and fullback, held his own yesterday in the contact session.

As they shape up at the moment, the first three Varsity elevens are approximately as follows.

"A" team: le, Coulson; lt, Dewey; lg, Rodls; c. J. Fisher; rg, Drvaric; rt, Davis; re, Florentino; qb, Geothals; rhb, Gannon; lhb, C. O'Donnell; fb, Moravec.

"B" team: le, Hauptfuhrer or W. Flynn; lt, Houston; lg, Drennan; c. Glynn; rg, K. Smith; re, Cummings or Garland; qb, Miklos; rhb, K. O'Donnell; lhb, Petrillo and L. Flynn; fb, Cowan.

"C" team: ends, see "B" team; lt, Allen; lg, S. Smith; c, Howe and Gardiner; rg, Gudaitis; rt, Pierce; qb, Henry and Tennant; lhb, Noonan; rhb, Lazzaro; fb, Shafer and Jackson.
