Millions of labor unionists, Communists and leftist forces marched through the capitals of the world on May Day in the first large-scale celebration of the Communist holiday since 1941.
There were few disorders. The most spectacular occurrence was in Rome, where masked Fascist gunmen seized the master radio transmitter and for a few minutes sang Fascist hymns and cheered Mussolini.
Highlights of May Day were:
