Varsity Works on Attack, Defense Against Coast Guard Formations

By Irvin M. Horowitz

There was no scrimmage at Varsity football practice yesterday, but Coach Dick Harlow sent his charges through a long, varied workout before calling a halt at early dusk. It was the Crimson's last full session before the meeting with Coast Guard on Saturday.

On the bill of fare was defense against Coast Guard plays, punting under pressure, and a lengthy signal drill by the "A", "B" and "C" elevens, as the Varsity coaches gave attention to final polishing touches in the Crimson attack. Today a short Stadium workout is expected, but the heavy portion of the pre-game drili has been concluded.

Lineup Set

Unless last minute changes are made, the Varsity's starting lineup for Saturday's engagement seems set. Only at the tackles, where Harlow will probably use Ned Dowey, Eddie Davis, and Howard Houston about equal amounts of time, is the situation fluid. The "A" team yesterday was as follows:

Coulson, le; Dewey and Houston, lt; Rodis, lg; Glynn, c; Drvaric, rg; Davis, rt; Florentine, re; Goethals, qb; Petrillo, lhb; Gannon, rhb; Moravec, fb.

Kieran Watches

John Kieran, expert on football, ornithology, and various miscellany, was an interested spectator at yesterday's work-out, and he and Harlow spent some time in discussing their common fields of interest.

Henry Lamar's Freshman eleven has been used as a guinea pig all week, running Coast Guard plays from the tricky "T" formation that the New Londoners employ, against the Varsity defenses. Harlow, as usual, devoted a major part of the drill to pass defense, for the Coasties' Sid Vaughn is expected to fill the air with leather on Saturday. Vaughn's tosses have accounted for six of the nine Coast Guard touchdowns thus for this season.

The visitors' record thus for has included three wins in three outings: the Academy lads have beaten Rensaleer 33 to 0; Amherst, 13 to 12, and Colby, 18 to 12.
