Kirkland Eleven Nips Dunster, 13-12

Fighting from behind all the way, and completely outclassed in the first half, the Kirkland Deacons made their "T" formation plays click in the closing minutes of the intramural football opener to nose out Dunster 13 to 12.

With the score tied at 12 each late in the fourth quarter, Kirkland, trying for the all-important point-after-touchdown decided that place-kicking had been far too shaky all afternoon, and elected to let their hopes ride instead on the passing arm of Jerry Glynn.

Glynn's Pass Wins

Glynn faded back and pitched a high one into the end-zone. A player from each team leaped into the air, and each came down with his hands on the ball. While both teams pleaded vociferously for the decision, the referee, remembering perhaps Adolph Samborski's pregame remark that the officials always have a good time in these games because "the funniest things happen," ruled the pass completed to Deacon Jerry Minton, giving Kirkland the margin of victory.

Dunster prevailed in the first half, Kirkland having the same timing trouble on its "I" plays that showed up in early scrimmages. Chuck MacDonald carried off tackle for the first Funster score after Dave Thompson had swept both ends for long gains.

Glynn put his team back in the game briefly with an 82-yard romp off tackle in the third quarter, but Dunster came roaring back in the same frame as Vic Critchlow intercepted a forward pass and raced 60 yards down the sidelines behind fine blocking. Glynn's touchdown pass to Bob Snow climaxed a late drive from midfield to set the stage for Kirkland's freak conversion.

Lowell Ties Yardlings

In a practice game, the newly-formed team from the Yard held Lowell to a 6 to 6 tie after one day of practice. Ray Silver blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end-zone for the Yardlings lone tally, while Bill Ayres scored for the Bellboys after Briggs' prodigious punt bounced out of bounds on the opponents' 5-yard line.
