Kirkland Holds Edge In House Grid Opener

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Brawn with a liberal dash of experience is the recipe that's going to start Kirkland House off to a victory in the opener of the House gridiron circuit with a lighter Dunster House eleven this afternoon. At least that's the way Captain George Blanchard of the Deacon aggregation, who bolsters up the line at guard, views the situation.

Lining up next to him in the tackle slot is Mort Singer, on the other side at center, Bill Sharpe, and at end appears Hugh McCaffery. The only thing of note about these men to a non-Kirkland rooter is that they all played on the pre-war house squad. And they all carry around 190 units of avoirdupois.

Saul Mariaschin of basktball fame, managing the Dunster squad, places his hopes for victory on back Chuck MacDonald and Bob Muller, whom he described last night as "fast, shifty boys." He said the Funsters would be greatly hampered, however, by the injury-loss of bucking six foot three fullback Don Rich.

Kirkland started with the largest turnout in the league, 25 men reporting the first day. They have always been able to field a full team; whereas the Dunster team has had Coach Elcewitz filling in embarassing gaps during some of the practices.
