Holy Cross Stalls Stahlmen In Second Encounter, 8 to 3

The big purple team from Holy Cross showed Saturday that it is still one of the best teams of the summer circuit by beating the Crimson 8 to 3. The Crusaders hit the ball solidly to collect 14 hits. Jack Tivnan, who would be considered a Class A pitcher in any league, was again the opposing hurler and pitched brilliantly, striking out eight batters while only issuing two free trips to first base.

Holy Cross jumped away to a one run lead in the initial frame. Sheldon Kaplan caught Steve "Legs" Bucek napping and dumped a perfect bunt in front of him for a base hit. He moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a fielder's choice, and came home when Bob Devlin lifted a fly to center.

The Stahlmen tied things up in the third with most of the action starring Bucek. After lacing a clean single to left, he pilfered second and came around home after an infield out and a fielder's choice. The Crusaders went ahead again in the bottom half of the same frame. Ray Borowicz got on when he forced John Whalen at second. He then stole second and Devlin followed with a bingle into center; Borowicz romped home when Carlton fumbled the ball.

See-Saw Fight

The see-saw battle kept up in the fifth when the Crimson came back to tally once more. Bucek got the second of the three hits he slammed out during the day, but was forced at second by Steve Davis. Davis, following the general pattern of things, stole second, and then came home when Jack Forte smashed a long double past the center fielder.

In the seventh, the biggest chance for the Stahl charges to really got ahead was blown sky-high. They got the bases loaded with nobody out, and couldn't squeeze across even one run. Eckenroth singled, Carlton walked, and Bucek beat out a bunt to third; but Davis fanned, Forte added his bit by forcing Eckenroth at home, and Pierce, pinch-hitting for Roche, couldn't do much better than the rest by looking at a third strike.

H.C. scored twice in their half of the seventh on two hits, a walk, and an error by the reliable Don Swegan. Still not they pushed over four more tallies in the eigth, sending out Wallace and bringing Norm Wholley in relief.

Top Edwards, 8 to 3

Camp Edwards was taken into camp for the second time last week by the tune of 8 to 3. "Lefty" Knowles handled the pitching duties, getting five men to go down on strikes. Saturday the Stahlmen will play host to the Melville PT Night Raiders on Soldiers Field, and will try to avenge the 6 to 3 beating suffered before.
