FIVE-RUN EIGHTH CONQUERS CASU AS WALLACE WINS THIRD CONTEST

The winning light finally dawned for the Crimson Saturday, as they out-pointed the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit team of Quonset Naval Air Station 7 to 4. This was the first victory in three games and brought the season's total to three wins as against two setbacks.

A couple of errors yielded the Varsity enough unearned runs to bag the spoils, giving Jack Wallace his third win of the campaign. However, the Stahlmen also spotted CASU with two unearned tallies. But aside from these momentary lapses some fine playing was turned in by both teams. Don Swegan, who might be called a second Marty Marion, performed neatly around shortstop, turning in some sparkling plays. Bob Carlton and Mal Allen made some fancy catches in the outfield.

Stahlmen Take Lead Early

Coach Floyd Stahl's boys got away to an early lead by scoring twice in the second inning. Jack Wallace, leading off, was walked. Eckenroth then rolled what looked like an easy double play ball to Dick Stoeber, the opposing third baseman; but he threw the ball wide of second, Wallace going to third and Eckenroth to second. Steve "Legs" Bucek rified a clean single down the third base line, sending in the two runners.

In the sixth inning Wallace decided to make the game more even by handing out a run free of charge. He walked the first batter, Tom Barrett, then picked up Duke Duzukola's easy grounder and spoiled a double killing by heaving the pellet to Carlton in centerfield, Barrett and Duzukola advancing a base of course. Then came the first of two wild pitches, but Eckenroth's throw to Wallace was in time to catch Barrett coming home. On the next wild heave, which Wallace threw soon afterwards, they weren't quickly enough to nab Duzukola before he could cross the platter.

In the next frame a triple by Jim Warner, who played with the St. Louis Cardinals before enlisting, a double by Joe Cusik, also once with the Cardinals, and three singles netted CASU three more runs.

The Big Eighth

But the Stahlmen, undaunted by this sudden outburst, surged right back with five tallies of their own. Bill Foley started it with a sizzling double past third base, Jack Forte followed him with a walk; but Roche forced Forte at second, with Foley advancing to third. Roche started to steal second, and the catcher threw to the base trying to cut him down; but nobody was covering and the ball sailed into center, allowing Foley to score and Roche to reach third. Swegan banged out a single to center scoring Roche, and came home after Allen walked and Wallace belted one to left. Bucek rapped a ball which was cinch for the third baseman to handle but he let it roll through his legs, Allen and Wallace scoring the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.

Lost to PT, 6 to 3

Last week the Melville PT Night Raiders sent the Crimson down to their second straight defeat by the tune of 6 to 3 Jack Wallace was again hit solidly for nine hits, including two homers, and six tallies before he was removed in the fifth inning. "Lefty" Knowles did a fine piece of relief hurling by pitching shutout ball and allowing only four hits in the four innings that he worked. The Varsity gathered single tallies in the first, six and eighth, and were held to six scattered hits. Pope, the PT pitcher, whiffed batters on strikes.

Yesterday the Varsity hopped down Falmouth to try for a repeat performance on the 4 to 0 whitewash that began summer season. Saturday it will have second go with Holey Cross, this time at Worcester, trying to recapture scalp from the Crusader collection.
