Another track season has come and gone, and although there were no Pirnies or Garlands or McKinnons around to set records for the Crimson, there was plenty of spirit to spare, especially in the final meet last Saturday. Summarizing this win (Harvard 60, Brown 4911/2, Tufts 441/2) Coach Mikkola commented yesterday, "They were really anxious to do well and there is no question that they showed as much spirit as some peacetime squads; although for many of them it was their first taste of competition in a big track meet."
Friday afternoon, Jaakko had stated that his team was in perfect condition, both inentally and physically, predicting at the same time that Brown and Tufts would kill each other off in events in which no Crimson men were expected to score. That is exactly what happened during the early events, with the Crimson coming strong at the end to sweep 24 out of 33 points in the last three races (220, 880, and low hurdles).
Hunter Clinches it
It was Jack Hunter who climaxed this drive by skimming over the 220 yard lows through quagmire conditions to clinch the meet for the Crimson. During the same drive, Hugh de Fries, running his last 880 for the Crimson, slogged home ahead of the field in 2.04, after putting Duncan Blanchard of Tufts out of the race with a 59 first quarter.
Also responsible for keeping the Crimson in the running Saturday were Marv Jenkins with firsts in the high hurdles and high jump; Pete Harwood with a first in the pole vault; and Herbie Fritts, who copped the 220.
Meanwhile at the New England Prep School meet at Andover, Rollo Sink, former national collegiate mile title-holder (4.17) from Southern Cal was beating workhorse Jim Rafferty by 10 yards in 4.25. Sink, who is currently attending the Navy Supply School here, has been working out under Jaakko for several weeks, and it was Jaakko who gave him instructions on how to run his race against Rafferty.
Following their victory on the rain-drenched Tufts oval, Coach Mikkola's runners and field-men have set their sights on the New England AAU Championships, which will be held Friday evening, June 15, in Manning Bowl, Lynn.
