Swimmers Topple Bruins In 52-20 Upset Opener

200 yard medley relay--Won by Harvard; Krayer, Vielman, Snow.

220 yard freestyle--Won by Borman (II); second, Carson (B); third, Stark (B).

50 yard freestyle--Won by Bryan (H); second, Simpson (H); third, Stark (B).

100 yard freestyle--Won by Gorman (H); second, Simpson (H); third, Carson (B).

150 yard backstroke--Won by Krayer (H); second, Callahan (B); third Willoughby (B).

300 yard breaststroke--Won by Schupp (B); second Vielman (H); third, Dinnell (B).

Dive--Won by Steffens (H), 69.9 points; second, Drohan (H), 69.4 points; third, Durhin (B).

440 yard freestyle--Won by Norris (H); second, Holiday (B); third, Bowestock (B).

400 yard freestyle relay--Won by Harvard; Crosby, Coburn, Lagarene, Burnham.

"Enthusiasm and drive" is the way that Coach Harold S. Ulen explains the the 52-20 upset victory inflicted by his swimmers over a highly rated Brown squad in the Indoor Athletic Pool Saturday night. With a green squad boasting only one non-freshman, the team showed aggressive and wily competitiveness that comes from either long experience or expert coaching.

When Frank Krayer, Julio Vielman, anl Bob Snow nosed out the Brown medley relay entry by a touch, it was a portent of things to come. By even less of a split second, Jerry Gorman nosed out Brown's Phil Carson in the 220 free-style, with Ted Norris of the Crimson coming in third. Gorman again beat the favored Carson in the 100 free-style which followed the dive.

Tony Bryan, late of the RAF and a graduate of Oxford doing special undergraduate work at the University, took the 50 yd. free-style with ease, with the stop-watch reading 26.4 secs. Ulen's two diving artists, Pete Steffens and Tony Drohan, ended up a half-point apart, with Steffens on top.

Brown felt most secure in the 150 yd. backstroke. But here again the Crimson's Frank Krayer bumped concrete first as Callahan's finishing kick faded in the last lap. Brown turned around the 100 yd. breaststroke to beat Julio Vielman, Ulen's Guatemalan butterflier. The Crimson came back in the 440, however, as Ted Norris finished well ahead of the pack.

Coachi Ulen's seconds string relay team, composed of Crosby, Coburn, Lagerene, and Burnham, downed the best that Brown could offer in the closing event.
