Lamar Chooses Starting Eleven; Varsity Shell Ready for Regatta

Only three civilians have made the Varsity football "A" squad, Coach Henry Lamar revealed today, with the remaining 25 men coming from the ranks of the V-12 and NROTC. Preparing for the first game of the informal season, scheduled against Tufts a week from tomorrow, Lamar is rounding out his starting eleven.

Leading the team from the tailback spot will be Ed Navin, flashy runner and pass-heaver. In the Saturday scrimmage, Navin accounted for the afternoon's only score almost single-handedly. He passed his squad down to the 15 yard stripe and drove it overland from there to the one on two plays, after which Bill Jenkins took it across.

Chapple Ready

Backing up Navin as reserve number four backs are Bob Chapple, star on the baseball nine, who is now ready for action on the gridiron, Rusty Hankin, and George O'Day. Chapple's pile-driving smashes through the line stood out on Saturday for the red team; Hankin was injured and is temporarily out of action.

At the fullback slot is Bobby Cowen, who will help Navin with the passing and running chores. Paul Garrity, favored to start at the beginning of practice, has been forced by Naval obligations to miss several scrimmages and as a result is Cowen's replacement. Carl Lindblad is also on hand to fill in as number three back.

Wally Trumbull, who does all the kicking for the team, has the quarterback, or blocking position, with Al McDonald and George Strout as replacements. Bill Jenkins, fleet pass-catcher, holds down the wing-back, while Glenn Schultz and Bob Meusell, both civilians, are the substitutes.

Outweighing and outperforming the backs, the Crimson linemen have thus far shown themselves to be the strong spot in Lamar's armor. Boasting five members of last year's squad, one veteran college gridman, and one promising civilian Freshman, the forward wall is powerful on both offense and defense.

Rod Perkins and Don Goeson, holdovers from the 1943 eleven, will be Lamar's chief pass-snarers, as well as bulwarks on the defense. Perkins set up the winning touchdown last Saturday when he grabbed a long heave from Ed Navin on the 15 yard line. Dana Bresnahan and Dave Mcluthoss will fill in at the wings.

Chet Pierce, Fresh star, and Bud Thurman, another newcomer, hold down the tackle slots, with Bill Sweeney and Ted Woggan available as substitutes. Ed Davis and Wally Mroz, both hard-hitting vets, are the guards, while Bill Regan and Warren Proudfoot will be the replacements. "Rocky" Jim Crane, Ken Brown, and Bob Rhodes are the first three centers, in that order
