A light but fighting group of gray and green clad Gold Coasters held powerful Eliot to three touchdowns yesterday in the House grid season's opening game. Outnumbered two to one and giving away pounds of weight, the Adams team was given little chance of even slowing up the red-jerseyed navy outfit.
But it wasn't until midway through the second quarter that Quinn dropped on a fumble behind the Adams goal line for the first Eliot score. Quinn rushed the extra point across to make the halftime score 7-0. Adams fought back on passes by Captain Coburn, but could get no where against the hard-charging Eliot forward wall. In the third period Johnny Boyce scampered 13 yards off tackle to put Eliot out in front 13-0. A fourth-quarter Kelley to Boyce touchdown heave closed the afternoon's scoring and when the conversion succeeded, Eliot led 20-0. Outclassed, but still trying, the Gold Coasters came close to scoring in the closing minutes when Fodor intercepted a pass and raced 40 yards to the Eliot 7. But here the Adams offensive was thoroughly throttled.
Displaying a fine aerial attack and a fairly smooth running offensive, Eliot appears to be the class of this fall's grid league. Lowell and Kirkland will play tomorrow in the second game of the intramural season.
