Competing under perfect racing conditions, Jaako Mikkola's Crimson harriers opened the 1944 season Saturday by taking the measure of a well-balanced Worcester Tech outfit, over the 3.7 mile University Handicap course.
At the same time it was learned that a triangular meet might possibly be arranged if Northeastern is able to enter either the Tufts affair on September 30, or the M.I.T. race on October 7.
Weakened by the loss of regulars Jim Foley and Sid Correll, the Crimson's chances didn't appear too bright; and when Captain Mark Tuttle, ace of the Crimson squad, lost his right shoe-spikes at the one mile mark, the team received a serious setback. Instead of dropping out of the race, though, Tuttle kept on going minus one shoe for the remaining three miles to finish fourth.
Tuttle Encourages Team
Inspired by this exhibition of running ability and courage, the rest of the Crimson team held together well and finished strong over the last mile, clinching the meet. Although Tuttle's right foot was pretty badly bruised and swollen at the finish, it is believed that he will be able to start working out again in a day or so.
With Tuttle handicapped from the loss of his shoe, it was up to teammate Charlie Atwell to snare first place. Trailing over most of the distance, Atwell moved up as the leaders swung back into the river bank cinder path, and in a thrilling stretch duel, collared the tiring Lacedonia, and went on to win out by one second.
Atwell, a native of Becon, New York, in winning the race, clipped almost a minute off his second place August Decathlon time, as did most of the Crimson team.
Checkers, stationed at various points along the 3.7 mile course, included S. Correll, F. Lindquist, II. Cunningham, V. Kable, W. Gallu, and M. Altieri.
X-Ray plates taken of Correll's injured foot show that he will be able to rejoin the team in a couple of days. Together with Foley and Matt Dick, Correll will supply the extra punch needed for the races with Tufts and M.I.T. on September 30 and October 7.
As is typical of Mikkola-coached teams, Harvard placed four men in a bunch in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th spots. The summary: Harvard 26, W.P.I. 31. Winner, Atwell (H); Lemieux (WT); Lacedonia (WT); Tuttle (H); Brooks (WT); Rochello (H); Homans (H); tie between Noble (H) and Cady (H); Chase (WT); Stricker (WT). Time--20.06
