MIKKOLA CALLS HARRIER SQUAD

First Cross Country Drill To Get Under Way Monday

Formal practice for the 1944 Crimson Varsity cross country team will get under way Monday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock, it was announced yesterday by head coach Jaako Mikkola.

"I'm hopeful now," says Mikkola, "and I think we may have a very fair team if everybody works out regularly and sticks to it."

The informal 1944 schedule calls for dual meets with Worcester Tech at Harvard on September 16, Tufts at Harvard on September 30, and a triangular meet with Rhode Island State and Holy Cross at a date as yet undecided.

Returning from last year's squad are Captain Mark Tuttle and Jim Foley, both NROTC men. In addition to these veterans, Mikkola will have a flock of newcomers including half-miler Tim Canty, V-12 transfer from Tufts, Wayne Homans of the NROTC, Freshman civilian Sid Correll, and V-12 Charlie Atwell, Jack Noble, and Mat Dick.

The 3,7 mile cross country run which winds up the 1944 Guadalcanal Decathlon tomorrow afternoon will probably decide which men will lead the Crimson harrier team in next month's races. The race tomorrow will start promptly at 2:45 o'clock and all entrants should report at Dillon Field House by 2:15 o'clock.

Says coach Jaako Mikkola, "there is no other sport which can be compared with cross country as far as physical benefits are concerned. Cross country men rank highest in the University in the annual step test.
