Results of the step tests taken the week of August 23 by V-12 men and College civilians have been announced by Norman W. Fradd, director of Physical Education. Fradd stated that the test is highly important because it can give an indication of improvement--something physical educators have desired for years.
All who took the test averaged 83.1 points, or "good." The men were divided into three groups--Navy V-12, Navy ROTC, and civilian. The V-12 unit had the highest score, with 585 men averaging 86.74. One hundred and fifty-nine ROTC men averaged 84.97, while the civilians were lowest with an average of 80.05.
Eldredge High Scorer
The highest individual score was made by J. L. Eldredge of the V12 unit and the crew. Of the sports, the highest group score was made in Military Track, where 26 civilians, 41 V-12ers and 22 NROTC men compiled an average of 89.2. The NROTC Mil. Track men had the highest group average in the College, hitting an "excellent" 95.64.
The lowest individual score was garnered by some civilian who eked out a 25. The lowest individual group score was in civilian conditioning, where 332 men averaged a barely-passing 75.44. Of the sports, the lowest group came in swimming, where non-swimmers dragged down the average to 78.16.
Traditional producer of highest scorers, the crew averaged 84.46. Baseball averaged 82.6 as the V-12 batsmen rolled up the second highest group average--a fit 90.04. In that V-12 group, the high mark of 103 was lowest V-12 athletic high, while the low mark, a still-good 79 was the highest of the V-12 lows.
Conditioning taken by all V-12ers, NROTC men, and civilians who made less than 75 on the first test last July, came closest to the average grade, as 885 men scored 81.22. High mark in the V-12 conditioning class was second highest in the College--128.
