Assembling on October 1, from various activities, Naval Indoctrination Schools at Princeton, Fort Schuyler, Tucson Arizona, and from duty direct present Company "E" began all over again the process of learning to read and to write. This time it was done without the aid of a pretty teacher who would on occasion take a student on her lap and in a place where an apple is of no value at all. The place was rainy, foggy, Boston, whose beautiful October weather has been mentioned in many poems and has even lent itself to the title of a book. But after the initial few days of rain and mist, the sun came out and we could see our way around.
Company Easy they call us but after seeing how misfortune has dogged our footsteps, we know Easy is a misnomer. We should be company Dog. Our predecessors, now in Company Dog, in rare Naval style "gummed up the works" for us . . . too much entertainment at smokers too little study, failure to learn to read the face of a clock or even to interpret bells, too much sack duty. At any rate the powers that be took a look at present company D and reconsidered the schedule. Close upon our arrival at N.T.S. and still in the rain came scuttlebutt to the effect that the course would no longer be five months in length, but only four. Classes would be given at night to make up for that lost month. Unlike most scuttlebutt this was too, too true. Page the Admiral
