Harvard May Support Nine During Summer

No Opponent Found For Trackmen, Crew

By Irvin M. Horowitz

Harvard will probably field a baseball team this summer, Carroll F. Getchell, Acting Director of the H. A. A., declared last night, and that outfit will be the only Crimson summer team to face foreign opposition.

Although the A-12 and V-12 programs may so tax College academic facilities as to force different practice hours for the various members of the team, Getchell feels confident that a baseball team can be selected and trained from the civilian population of about 1200. Floyd Stahl, who currently handles the baseball team, will be in charge of any summer nine formed.

Navy Will Have Own Team

The Harvard team will probably not include any naval units located here, Getchell said, since the Navy may produce teams of its own. The Crimson schedule, which will be arranged a few weeks after the new term begins on July 6, will be similar to that of last summer, with foes picked from local army camps, naval stations, semi-pros, factory nines, and any colleges wanting games. It is definitely known that Tufts will have a team this summer.

There are a number of outfits, service teams especially, who are anxious for games, Getchell continued. Several aggregations who asked for games this spring had to be refused because of the shortness of the diamond season. Two games a week will probably occupy the summer Stahlmen.

Bert Haines will be down at Newell Boat House all summer, and there will undoubtedly be a number of good oarsmen out to fulfill exercise credits, but lack of opposition will probably preclude any formal races. Intramural events may be scheduled.

Track in Conditioning

To satisfy budding track men who will have little other outside competition, some military track may well be included in Norman Fradd's summer conditioning program. Getchell revealed. In case somebody wasn't aware of it, all civilian students will be again required to take four hours of exercise a week, two major and two minor.

The H. A. A. itself, despite prevailing rumors to the contrary, is expected to remain open after July 1. A shell of its former self now that formal football has been abolished, the Quincy Street office will still be handling whatever athletics are going on around the University, including the supervision of softball tournaments now being run among the Midshipmen at the B-School.
