Thomas R. Nunan, Jr. of Newton Center and Winthrop House was elected Permanent Class Secretary when approximately 350 members of the Class of '45 went to the polls yesterday and Monday. At the same time nine other men from the same Class were elected as members of the Permanent Class Committee. Tying for highest number of votes of the chosen committeemen were Dean M. Hennessey of Chicago and the Varsity Club and Sidney O. Smith of Gainesville, Georgia and Kirkland House.

Other '45 men elected to the Committee in order of their total number of votes were Richard W. Mechem of Washington, Peter Garland of Buzzards Bay, James E. McNulty, Jr. of Oak "Park, Illinois, Donald W. Richards of Providence, Rhode Island, John W. Fisher of Weston, Frank D. Bixler of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Robert T. P. Storer, Jr. of Cambridge.

For the key position of Class Secretary Numan won out by a one-vote lead in perhaps the closest election of the year. Richard W. Mechem closely trailed his narrow lead, having 60 votes to Nunan's 61. In third place with 57 votes was Michael J. De Leo. Two hundred and seventy-three men cast votes for the seven Secretary-nominees listed on the ballot. Election Results Class Secretary Thomas Richard Nunan, Jr.  61 Permanent Class Committee Dean McDonald Hennessey  148 Sidney Olsen Smith, Jr.  148 Richard Watson Mechem  146 Peter Garland  142 James Edmund McNulty, Jr.  128 Donald Westgate Richards  119 John Winters Fisher  116 Frank David Bixler  103 Robert Treat Paine Storer, Jr.  98

Purpose of this early election of Class of '45 officers, which would not have normally been held until the Class's Senior year, is to solidify the organization and provide a nucleus of Class leaders for keeping up the name of the Class in a foreseen period of post-war disruption.

Still to be chosen is the Class Day Committee, but this group cannot be selected until the Class is somewhat reunited in the post-war period. It is probable than a Committee with its function of planning and organizing such a pre-graduation function as Class Day, elected at this time, would never come together again as a unit. Thus temporary elimination of this Committee from the ballot is necessary.
