Jerome D. Greene '96, Secretary to the Corporation, will retire from active service on July 1, President Conant announced last night. He will be succeeded by A. Calvert Smith, assistant to the President.
Greene, who has also been Secretary to the Board of Overseers, will continue in this capacity and following a vote of the President and Fellows and the Board of Overseers, will become Honorary Keeper of the Corporation Records beginning on the date of his retirement.
During the past three decades Smith has taken an active part in world politics and business affairs. In the first World War he was a captain of infantry and was later attached to the American Commission to negotiate the peace, in Paris, following the armistice.
After engaging in the investment and banking business in New York City for many years, Smith returned to serve as Secretary to the President in 1940 and was appointed to his present position in 1942.
Lengthy Record
A lengthy record of service to the University began for Greene in 1901 when he became Secretary to President Eliot. This title was later changed to Secretary to the Corporation, his present designation. During his term of office under three presidents, he has also participated in many other activities connected with the University.
These include the founding of the Alumni Directory, Alumni Bulletin, and University Gazette and it was he who was responsible for the staging of the 90th birthday celebration of President Eliot and for directing the Tercentenary festivities in 1936.
Outside the University, Greene, widely known in cultural and educational circles, has done much in the field of social service and relief work, serving with the Rockefeller Institute and Foundation.
