An informal cross country meet with Boston College and Tufts replaced the regular practice for the track team's distance men on Saturday, with Tim Coggeshall '44, the only remaining member of last fall's Varsity squad pacing the pack.
Mark Tuttle '46, who run in last fall's team, followed closely, on the Charles River course, with Dick Bryan, Archie Lyon, and Henry Mason, all on last year's Freshman team pressing him hard. These comprise the nucleus of what may become a powerful squad, but there is a serious scarcity of weight hurlers.
Veterans Are Few
With the departure of Dick Pfister '42, last year's Varsity shot star, and other men like Pete garland, who took four events in the Freshman meet with Yale last year, While Fisher '45 now is the only experienced hurler left on the squad.
Tom White '43, who won the Heptagonal last year, and Jack Bonner, whose unexpected win clinched the Crimson victory in the same meet, have also departed. Jack and Bob Fisher, Bob Chase '43 and John Shattuck '43, also good men, have gone, too. As a result new men from '45 and '46 comprise the larger part of the present squad.
Since wartime travel and expense have cut down on the big meets with traditional rivals, there will be more meets with nearby colleges this year.
