Harvard to Keep Original Plans Despite Army Edict

"Harvard will carry on with its present sports program until definite orders to the contrary are received from Washington," Carroll F. Getchell, business manager of the Harvard Athletic Association; said last night, commenting upon a statement of Colonel Herman Beukema, director of the Army Specialized Training Program, that trainees could not participate in intercollegiate sports.

Although most of the nation's press have accepted this edict as a death blow to college intercollegiate sports, complete pessimism is not warranted, Getchell said, since no one can expect much more than intramural sports when conversion of the colleges is completed.

The College will have to wait and see how many students will remain in College, and what the nature of the athletic needs of the Army and Navy trainees will require. "As long as men are accepted for Harvard College, we will attend to their physical training to the best of our ability" Getchell stated.

According to the statement from Washington Army men sent to the colleges for training will have no time for any sports beyond those of an intramural character,
