The HARVARD SERVICE NEWS opens its portals and beer closet to all University students who want to try out for the fall competition Tuesday, November 9, at 7:30 o'clock.
Candidates of all sorts, shapes, sizes, and ability may compete for positions on the News, Photo, and Business Boards. Previous journalistic training is not necessary in the SERVICE NEWS' training that teaches its reporters how to bully police, influence people, and appear in print.
Who hasn't hankered at one time or another for the "big office" complex?. The clamor of telephones and typewriters, the pulse beat of a full-fledged newspaper, are not always restricted to climax scenes in the movies. Harvard's only breakfast table paper stands ready to share some of its excitement Tuesday night.
The competition will run for a minimum of six weeks, after which the outstanding men will be elected. Candidates will be required to bring in assigned news stories and features. The territory is unlimited, but it will probably range around the grounds of the College, affording an unprecedented opportunity to visit University Hall on something more than ominous duty.
Competitors for positions on the news board gain practical experience in writing and summarizing effectively. They learn to judge what is news and what is not, what is important and what should be discarded. A member of the SERVICE NEWS will regard this part of his college career as one of the most valuable, interesting, and enjoyable to remember.
