A second conference group counting for half-course credit will be offered next semester by Eliot House, John H. Finley, Jr. '25, master of Eliot, revealel last night. Because of the complete success of the original conference, held for the first time during the fall semester, it was decided to give another course despite staff shortages which forced other Houses to abandon tentative plan for spring courses.
Entitled "Comedy", the course will be conducted by Otto E. Schoen-Rene '30, instructor in English, assisted by Francis O. Matthiesson '27, professor of History and Literature, Jean-Joseph Sezuce, associate professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Cesar L. Barber '35, instructor in History and Literature, and Finley. The course will include reading of the representative works of Aristophanes, Plautus, Jonson, Shakespeare, Mollere, Gogol, and Shaw.
Lively Discussion
Reporting on the fall conference, Finley characterized the general atmosphere as that of complete freedom and lively discussion. "It resembles a tutorial conference on a distribution basis," he said. Although the group was small, the weekly two hour meetings were always filled with argument.
A short paper based on the text, will be required, as well as a final test, but otherwise there will be only discussion on the works read. Because of the unique position of these courses, outsiders within reason are invited to join members of Eliot House in taking the course. All who wish to enroll should see Schoen-Rene before the opening of the next semester.
