Joseph H. Beale '82, Royall Professor of Law, emeritus, a legal expert whose opinions were quoted throughout the nation, died Wednesday at his Chauncy Street home. Professor Beale was 81 years old, and spent 47 years teaching at the Law School.

After graduating from the Law School in 1887, Professor Beale became an instructor there three years later, and rose to the rank of full professor in 1897. He continued in this office even when he left the University to become, in 1902, the first Dean of the new Chicago University Law School. Two years later he returned to Cambridge and his Harvard duties.

Before he was awarded the Royall professorship, Professor Beale had been appointed Carter Professor of Jurisprudence and Bussey Professor of Law. Honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws came from the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin, Cambridge University, and Harvard.

He was an active public figure, and served a term on the Cambridge Board of Aldermen, during which time he sponsored a charter provision in Cambridge which established a five-man school committee.
