IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY MARKS LOWELL FUNERAL

Harvard bade farewell to its late president, A. Lawrence Lowell '77, in a simple but impressive ceremony in Memorial Church Saturday morning, with the most distinguished citizens of the University and the Commonwealth in attendance.

Almost a thousand people were present to pay a final tribute to the man credited with making a Harvard education what it is today, or what it was before the war. They included J. Pierpont Morgan '89, Governor Saltonstall, and the publicity-shinning secretary who served Lowell for 47 years.

After an invocation by Dean Willard L. Sperry of the Divinity School, the bier was carried in by eight members of Lowell House, followed by the pall bearers. Then came a dignified service lasting about 45 minutes, with the funeral cortege leaving for Mount Auburn Cemetery shortly before noon.

During the hour from 11 to 12 o'clock all classes in the University were suspended.

Pallbearers were President Conant, Governor Leverett Saltonstall '14, Charles Francis Adams '88, president of the Board of Overseers; John F. Moors '83, retired fellow; George R. Agassiz '84, former president of the Board of Overseers; Charles Seymour, president of Yale University; and Henry L. Shattuck '01, Dr. Roger I. Lee '01, Charles A. Coolidge '17, and Henry James '99, all fellows of the College.

Dean Hanford was also in the group, as were Professor Julian L. Coolidge '95, former master of Lowell House; Karl T. Compton president of M. I. T.; William H. Claflin '15, treasurer of the College; and Arthur D. Nock, acting chairman of the Society of Fellows.

Representing the undergraduates were these members of the Student Council: President Thomas Matters '43, Treasurer John P. Kennedy, Jr. '44, John Richardson, Jr. '44 George M. Burditt, Jr. '44, Hugh M. Hyde '44, George A. Saxton, Jr. '44, and Thomas V. Keene, Jr. '45.
